NAMI Basics

We are excited to announce NAMI Basics OnDemand is now available to parents and caregivers at basics.nami.org!

Participants register with their name, email address and zip code. Once registered, participants receive an email with a link specific to their email address. It is important participants save the email so they are able to log-in and pick up where they left off in the course.

We created NAMI Basics OnDemand in response to the outpouring of requests by parents and caregivers for a program option that doesn’t require in person attendance. The OnDemand format gives participants an opportunity to get engaged with NAMI programs who otherwise may not be able to participate in their communities.

NAMI Basics OnDemand facts:
  • The six-module course covers the same material as the in-person NAMI Basics classes.
  • NAMI Basics OnDemand gives parents and caregivers the opportunity to participate in NAMI Basics on their own schedule without the worry of finding care for their children, traveling or feeling the disappointment of an in-person class canceling because of low enrollment.
  • The Connect and Share option in NAMI Basics OnDemand offers parents and caregivers the opportunity to share stories, support and interact with each other in an online setting.

NAMI Basics is a free, six-session education program for parents, caregivers and other family who provide care for youth (age 22 or younger) who are experiencing mental health symptoms.
Since 2009, NAMI Basics has been offered by NAMI Affiliates in an in-person, group setting.

To meet increasing demand for more convenient access to the program, NAMI created NAMI Basics OnDemand, which is offered online and available 24/7.
Just like the in-person format, NAMI Basics OnDemand is free and helps parents and caregivers:
  • Develop confidence and stamina to support their child with compassion
  • Learn about different types of mental health care professionals, available treatment options and therapies
  • Prepare for crisis situations, and understand how to navigate the public mental health care, school and juvenile justice systems
The program is divided into six sessions, including:
  1. Basic elements of coping with mental health conditions
  2. Brain biology and getting a diagnosis
  3. Communication skills and crisis preparation
  4. Treatment and connecting with others by sharing your story
  5. Navigating the mental health and education systems
  6. Self-care and advocacy
