Is Your Teen Using? Signs and Symptoms of Substance Abuse
There’s no easy way to figure out if your teen is using drugs or alcohol. As you’ll see, many of the signs and symptoms of teen substance abuse listed below are also, at times, typical adolescent behavior. Many are also symptoms of mental health issues, including depression or anxiety disorders.

Stairway to Heroin
Stairway to Heroin has evolved into a model program for education, prevention and recovery used in communities and school districts across the state of Wisconsin and in parts of Illinois with a mission of making a difference in the lives of families. The four-part prevention model is designed to be implemented in schools and communities to address the ongoing substance abuse epidemic adolescents and young adults are facing today.

How Teens hide drug use and other red flags
These items are not just for school projects!
  • Aluminum foil, cotton balls, sandwich bags, tea light candle holders, bent paper clips, spoons, and even ball point pens are all commonly associated with heroin use.
  • Baking soda - not just an air freshener
  • Tiny blue envelopes sold for stamp collecting are used to package heroin 99 percent of the time.
  • Pieces of electrical cord or even a belt, hidden or left out.
  • Drugs hidden between heavy textbooks, or inside canisters of protein powder.
  • Tissue paper with blood stains in Teen trash can
  • Frisbee
  • Appearance of unusual drug apparatuses, including pipes, rolling papers, small medicine bottles, eye drops, butane lighters, or makeshift smoking devices, like bongs made out of toilet paper rolls and aluminum foil.
  • Fabric softener sheets for disguising smoke at then end of a cardboard toilet paper roll. Household items like air fresheners or incense, even mint to hide the smell of marijuana or tobacco use.
  • Rolled up dollar bills, cd case, and pens with the ink removed can be used as hiding spots for prescription drugs.
